Massive stars and high-energy neutrinos

چکیده

Massive stars have been associated with the production of high-energy neutrinos since the early claims of detection of very high-energy gamma rays from Cygnus X-3 in the 1970s and early 1980s. Although such claims are now discredited, many thoretical models were developed predicting significant neutrino fluxes from binary systems with massive stars. With the discovery of microquasars, new, improved models appeared. The large neutrino telescopes currently under construction (IceCube, Antares) and the detection of gammaray sources of likely hadronic origin associated with massive binaries and starforming regions make the prospects for high-energy neutrino astronomy quite promising. In this paper I will review the basic features of neutrino production in stellar systems and I will discuss the physical implications of a positive neutrino detection from such systems for our view of the stellar evolution and comsic ray origin.

Quasithermal neutrinos from rotating protoneutron stars born during core collapse of massive stars

Rotating and magnetized protoneutron stars (PNSs) may drive relativistic magneto-centrifugally accelerated winds as they cool immediately after core collapse. The wind fluid near the star is composed of neutrons and protons, and the neutrons become relativistic while collisionally coupled with the ions. Here, we argue that the neutrons in the flow eventually undergo inelastic collisions around ...

Signatures of hadronic cosmic rays in starbursts? High-energy photons and neutrinos from NGC253

We show that it appears possible for starburst galaxies, like the nearby NGC 253, recently identified as a TeV source by the CANGAROO collaboration, to emit a significant amount of high-energy γ-rays and neutrinos through hadronic processes in their cores. We suggest that proton illumination of the inner winds of massive stars can be a viable mechanism for producing TeV γ-rays and neutrinos wit...

GeV gamma-rays and TeV neutrinos from very massive compact binary systems: The case of WR 20a

Massive Wolf-Rayet stars in a compact binary system are characterized by very strong winds which collide creating a shock wave. If the wind nuclei, from helium up to oxygen, accelerated at the shock can reach large enough energies, they suffer disintegration in collisions with soft thermal radiation from the massive stars injecting relativistic protons and neutrons. Protons collide with the mat...

High-energy neutrino as observational signature of massive black hole formation

We describe the formation of a seed massive black hole (MBH) inside a supermassive star (SMS) in a distant galactic nucleus. The short-lived SMS is naturally formed due to collision destructions of normal stars in the evolving galactic nucleus. The neutron stars (NSs) and stellar-mass black holes form a compact self-gravitating subsystem deep inside a SMS. This subsystem is short-lived in compa...

Production of high-energy μ neutrinos from young neutron stars

Young, rapidly rotating neutron stars could accelerate protons to energies of ∼ 1 PeV close to the stellar surface, which scatter with x-rays from the stellar surface through the ∆ resonance and produce pions. The pions subsequently decay to produce muon neutrinos. We find that the energy spectrum of muon neutrinos consists of a sharp rise at ∼ 50 TeV, corresponding to the onset of the resonanc...
